A little piece of the USA in County Kildare and the venue for the 2006 Ryder Cup.
Designed by Arnold Palmer although, so the story goes, Jack Nicklaus overflying the course on his way to Dublin, and knowing Palmer's reputation for not having exactly a "hands on" approach to his course design activities, is said to have remarked, "Very nice, has Arnold seen it?" . Be that as it may, it is still as good an example of a modern American design as one is likely to find, precious little rough, shallow bunkers and plenty of water: lakes, streams and part of the River Liffey. This is used at "Inish More", the 608 yard 7th, where a double dog leg is followed by a third shot (you hope) pitched over the river.
The last three holes are as difficult a closing sequence as you will find anywhere, the 17th for example has the green right on the water's edge allowing for some devilish pin positions. |
